As a trader and lover of the mountains, I was really happy when my wife Mariena and dog Jacks joined me on a two-month adventure in the French Alps. We rented a cozy house in the heart of the mountains, with breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks and endless opportunities for snowboarding, skiing, hiking, and skitouring.

For the first few weeks, we enjoyed the winter wonderland, but as the weather got warmer, the snow melted and revealed something maybe even more magical: the endless possibilities for outdoor activities in the mountains. We started biking, hiking, and even slept in shelters under the stars. And then, something amazing happened – I finally got to climb again!

A couple of years ago, I learned how to rock climb, but when the covid pandemic hit we were not able to travel so I was not able to climb and I kind of forgot how much I loved it. There are no climbing gym nearby on Texel in the Netherlands, I had to put my passion on hold. But now, with the beautiful weather and stunning natural landscape of the French Alps, I was finally able to get back on the rock.

The simillarities between trading and climbing

While climbing, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between this beautiful sport and trading. Both require a certain level of risk-taking, overcoming fear, and maintaining calm while taking calculated steps. Both also require skill and strategy, as well as having safety measures in place, whether it’s a rope or a well-thought-out trading plan.

Just like planning out my climbing routes, I meticulously plan out my trades. I analyze the market, look for opportunities in the setups I have learned, and make calculated moves. And just like climbing, I need to be prepared for unexpected events and have a backup plan in case things go wrong.

Climbing and trading also share the same rush of adrenaline and sense of accomplishment. When I reach the summit of a mountain or close out a good executed trade, I feel a sense of pride and fulfillment.

The importance of respecting risk

But perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned from touring in dangerous snow and climbing on steep rocks that also applies to trading is the importance of respecting the mountain or the market. Both can be unpredictable and dangerous, and both require a deep understanding of the risks involved. Whether it’s checking weather forecasts before climbing or staying up to date with the latest market news before trading, I need to approach both with caution and respect.

As I write this, I’m already thinking about when I can come back to the French Alps again. In fact, my wife and I have been considering buying or renting a place here so we can stay here more often. Being able to enjoy the beauty of the mountains while also being able to trade from anywhere in the world is a dream come true.

However, as much as I love being here, I have to admit that it’s been difficult to disconnect from work. Trading is a 24/7 job, and it’s hard to turn off that part of my brain. But I’m trying my best to enjoy my time here and appreciate the beauty of the mountains without constantly checking my phone or laptop.

In a couple of days, we’ll be going home, and I have to say, it’s been an amazing time here. I feel blessed to be able to live my dream of traveling and trading, and I can’t wait to come back to the French Alps again for more adventures!

Hi Bastian. I found your website while I was looking for examples of Minervini’s setups on Google. I was surprised to find out that also you stumbled upon Kristjan setups, I guess he became more famous after the interview with Chat with Traders.
Just wanted to thank you for the useful info you post on this website, including mentioning Riley’s website which I found also useful.
I hope to find consistency like you did, so that I’ll be able to spend most of my time travelling, climbing, and doing Via Ferratas :).
    Cheers.
